The Changsha Municipal Public Security Bureau announced yesterday that they had arrested 96 suspects and seized 43 tons of contaminated dried bean curd (腐竹) and bean vermicelli (粉絲) in a huge bust involving the illegal production of chemically-tainted food.
The Changsha PSB worked with police from Shanghai as well as authorities in both Fujian and Jiangxi provinces to close down production at a workshop in Changsha that was adding borax, urotropin, formaldehyde and other chemicals during the production of the food.
Police said that 20 million yuan's worth of contaminated food had already been sold before the arrests were made.
According to Information Center of Changsha public security bureau, late this August, a policeman from Changsha county
discovered that dried beancurd sticks produced by a Minyue (閩樂) facturing were adding chemicals to their products.
Police also discovered that the owner of the factory, a certain Mr. Liao (廖某) had been producing contaminated food since Jul 2008 and that these poisoned beancurd sticks had mainly been sold through a store called Taifeng Guye (泰豐菇業(yè)) in Changha's large Gaoqiao market.
The owner of the store that sold the contaminated products was arrested in Fujian province.
Aside from selling the "Minyue" brand, the store also sold other brands such as Shenquan (沈泉牌), Fufeng (富峰牌) and Mingfeng (名峰牌) which also contained illegal additives.
