China shares extended losses on Wednesday, with the Shanghai Composite Index remaining below 2,000 points and falling to its lowest close in almost four years.
The Shanghai index was down 1.3 percent on Tuesday and fell to 1,991.16 points, its lowest close since early 2009.
Trading in 43 stocks was halted after the value of their shares fell by 10 percent, the maximum daily trading limit. Another 90 stocks saw their value decline by more than 9 percent during Tueday's trading.
The index continued to fall on Wednesday, closing at 1973.52, down 0.89 percent.
The index measuring trade on China's Nasdaq-like growth enterprise board, ChiNext, also fell by 3.54 percent on Tuesday.
