Chongqing Starts Reform of Hukou System

Chongqing, one of the four Chinese cities directly under national jurisdiction, began its reform of the hukou (national registration) system yesterday, allowing non-urban residents who have worked or run businesses for over five years in Chongqing, bought a commercial flat, invested in industry and paid taxes of over 100,000 Yuan over three consecutive years or over 50,000 Yuan in one year, to apply for registration as Chongqing urban residents. More than 100,000 locals have demonstrated interest in the new policy.
