Four days after Qian Yunhui, head of the Zhaiqiao Village in Wenzhou City of Zhejiang Province, died, the local police station claimed his death was a traffic accident despite the rumor being spread across the internet that he was in fact murdered. It has been reported that in the 20 days after he was elected as the head of his village, Qian Yunhui had been seeking justice for his fellow villagers who did not obtain any compensation for their land that was expropriated by the local government in 2004. Qian had also been imprisoned three times.
